Gold Connections
Gold Connections EP
Fat Possum Records [2017]
Who: Gold Connections is led by songwriter, guitarist and lyricist Will Marsh and their self-titled debut EP was produced by and features Will Toledo (Car Seat Headrest) on drums, electric guitar, bass, and backing vocals.
Sound: Slacker indie rock to the core. If you like Car Seat Headrest, then you will dig the laid-back smoldering vibes of Gold Connections. You will also hear some throwback Walkmen similarities in the album.
TFN Final Take: Considering how much I enjoy Car Seat Headrest, the debut EP from Gold Connections seemed like a must. Right from the opening systematic drum tap to the warming up of instruments on first track “Faith In Anyone,” Will Marsh sets the tone for direction, sound and expectations. Not quite at the 2 minute mark the song intensifies with a chorus before settling back down. At over 5 minutes long, Gold Connections makes a perfect sprawling indie rock song.
Two other tracks on the five song EP extend past the 5-minute mark, so Gold Connections is all about the experience and not just hitting you with everything at once. It is a similar formula that Car Seat Headrest uses and just like CSH – it works here for Gold Connections.
The foot stomping loudness of “Popular Fiction” rides along smoothly and then explodes with vocal effects, swirling guitars and drums. This calming indie rock showcases the groups talent and Marsh as a songwriter. This EP has all the right components and gives you plenty to listen to within its 24-minute running time. It also accomplishes what every solid EP does – gets you stoked for a Gold Connections full length!
