Album Overview: Florry started as the solo songwriting outlet of Francie Medosch, shaped by the scrappy, vibrant DIY scene in Philadelphia. What began as lo-fi and intimate has since evolved into a full-band operation, featuring a rotating but close-knit crew—many of whom are tied to the East Coast indie and alt-country scenes. As the project grew, so did its confidence. After a move to Burlington, Francie found a new sense of community among the rising Northern alt-country crowd, and Sounds Like… feels like the soundtrack to that next chapter.
This album finds Florry in full bloom—more expansive, but still raw and real. Tracked quickly in the Blue Ridge Mountains with Colin Miller (MJ Lenderman), Sounds Like… balances ragged spontaneity with a sharpened sense of purpose. It’s full of long nights, inside jokes, emotional burnouts, and political snapshots. The songs hit like half-forgotten memories that crash back hard, but this time you’re ready for them. It’s open-hearted, unfiltered, and always in motion.
Musical Style: Florry stitches together twangy Americana, fuzzy indie rock, and big, group-sung anthems with a restless energy. There’s country storytelling here, pedal steel wails, crunchy guitar solos, and overlapping vocals that feel more punk basement than polished studio. Evolution of Sound: Compared to The Holey Bible (2023), this one feels more confident and outward-facing. The band has tightened their playing without sanding down the rough edges. The arrangements stretch out more. Francie’s vocals are bolder. You can feel the chemistry between bandmates in every shout and strum. Colin Miller’s production gives everything room to breathe—it’s still raw, but more dialed-in than before. It’s Florry’s most fully-formed album yet.
Artists with Similar Fire: If you’re into MJ Lenderman, Wednesday, Drive-By Truckers, The Jayhawks, or Big Thief, there’s a good chance Sounds Like… will hit you just right. There are echoes of Silver Jews in its offbeat sincerity, and some of Lucinda Williams’ grit and grace. You might even catch a bit of Nana Grizol’s community spirit or Pavement’s beautifully casual chaos.
Pivotal Tracks: “Truck Flipped Over ’19” sets the tone with a mix of personal trauma and quiet protest—it’s the emotional core of the record. “Waiting Around to Provide” simmers with unease, hanging in a liminal space that feels both tense and tender. Then there’s “Dip Myself in Like an Ice Cream Cone,” which is weird, wonderful, and full of charm—a loose, swaggering jam that shows off the band’s sense of humor and heart. “Pretty Eyes Lorraine” stands out for its poetic depth, weaving together thoughts on identity, heritage, and place with references to To the Wedding and Big Trouble in Little China. It’s dreamy, grounded, and sharply personal all at once.
Lyrical Strength: Francie Medosch’s lyrics cut deep without ever sounding forced. She writes with a casual honesty that blurs the personal and the political—lines that hit like passing thoughts you’ve never fully unpacked. There’s no posturing here, just real stuff: grief, friendship, longing, responsibility. The words don’t scream for attention, but they stay with you. It’s storytelling with a quiet gravity, inviting you to sit with the mess instead of offering clean answers.
Final Groove: Sounds Like… is Florry’s strongest release yet—brimming with energy, vulnerability, and an anything-goes spirit that feels both reckless and wise. It’s the sound of a band that’s lived through the haze and come out clearer, still laughing, still trying, still loud. There’s a confidence here that’s new but hard-won, and it hints at even bigger things ahead. Wherever Florry goes next, we’ll be listening.
