Sound: Moody electronic psych-pop; think Tame Impala mixed with some Arcade Fire.
TFN Final Take: C.R. and the Degenerates (aka Chris Gennone) does a great job of creating a mood on their new release Close Encounters. Keyboard, drums, and guitar form the sound, in that order. Longing vocals laid over gloomy, languid beats comprise the formula for most tracks. While the song construction is not complex, I found myself thinking and feeling in distinct ways while listening to the album. At a brisk 22 minutes (26 with a bonus track), it definitely doesn’t overstay its welcome. For those of us who appreciate subtlety and space to imprint our own experience onto the music, C.R. and the Degenerates is a must-listen.
