Wand is a band that really deserves to find some success. Having been hand-picked for Ty Segall’s God? Label, Wand released Ganglion Reef, one of the best releases of 2014 (my personal #6 of last year), and I’ve described them as one of the best bands the Elephant Six collective never produced. It seems they’ve returned on In The Red to continue their hyperspace hijinks.
Comparing their new song “Self Hypnosis In 3 Days” to Ganglion Reef, the latter may seem tame by comparison. The new track draws more influence from Zig Zags, FUZZ, Ty Segall Band, Hawkwind, and Meatbodies (front man Cory Thomas Hanson has played with Meatbodies before). Its grueling space metal with a scuzzy, psychedelic twist, a starry-eyed desert caravan that shoots for the moon. It’s classic Wand with an unconventional edge.
Wand’s new album Golem will be released on March 17th and from the promise displayed on “Self Hypnosis In 3 Days” I’m already getting excited. Wand easily shows they still have it and if Golem melds the sleepy psych of Ganglion Reef with the epic hooks of the rest of In The Red’s roster then I have no doubt we have a Top 50 album for 2015 on our hands.
