FIRE TRACK PREMIERE: Teeth Marks – “Black Whale, White Sound”
Columbus noise-shifters Teeth Marks crash right into you with their first single off the upcoming LP Raise/Wreck/Rebuild/Raze, and it’s a rock rush you will want to check out. “Black Whale, White Sound” drops everywhere streaming tomorrow (August 15), but you can hear it TODAY right here.
Clocking in somewhere between emotional wreckage and fuzzed-out release, the track is full of tension and texture—where sludgy walls of distortion get razed to a gothic whisper before erupting again. It’s the sound of regret you can bang your fist against the wall to.
The song is easy for most of us to connect with (at some point in our life) as it’s got a dry sense of humor that frontman Joshua James sums up below:
“We [Teeth Marks] love soft/loud dynamics in music, and ‘Black Whale, White Sound’ showcases our take on that well-worn utility in alt-music songwriting. As Myspace success story Colbie Caillat once said, ‘A great song should lift your heart, warm the soul and make you feel good.’ I just love her confidence to flout the Oxford comma.
Anyway, this particular song, ‘Black Whale,’ is about being hungover as an aging adult and feeling like a piece of shit for it. They can’t all be uplifting.”
Raise/Wreck/Rebuild/Raze hits vinyl this fall via Better Days Will Haunt You Records. Second single “Tin Soldiers” arrives October 3rd with a full music video. Tour plans in the works. Doomgaze and dad-hangovers never sounded this good.
