Buffalo Killers
Dangerous Highway: A Tribute To The Songs Of Eddie Hinton Vol. 4
Shake It Records [2012]

Eddie Hinton was a songwriter/singer/guitarist and a key player in the Muscle Shoals Sound from 1967-1971. This series is just a small attempt to spotlight his great work and influence over the years. So far Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers), Drive-By Truckers, Wussy and Heartless Bastards have handled the first three volumes and to continue the stellar offerings we have Cincinnati’s Buffalo Killers taking on “Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na-Boom-Boom)” and “Still Water Runs Deep” that also features the production and recording by Dan Auerbach (Black Keys).

Both tracks here let the Buffalo Killers soul shine especially as they repeatedly sing out “Sha-Na-Boom-Boom yeah” on the A-side. The slower tempo fits right into their retro warm 70’s sound and just pulls you into the track. The B-side here is actually The Staples Singers first hit for Stax, “Still Water Runs Deep”, which highlighted Hinton’s session work and was always cited as one of his favorites. You can’t go wrong picking up any of these 7-inch volumes and the Buffalo Killers keep the series thriving!
