Doug Gillard Is Back and He’s Got a Lot On His Mind
Doug Gillard, the guy behind some of the most infectious guitar work in indie rock with of course Guided by Voices and Nada Surf, just dropped the first single off his upcoming solo album. “Face Of Smiles” is out now, and it comes with this video that’s equal parts charming and deadpan: just Gillard navigating a regular day in NYC, hopping around for a recording session with engineer Tom Beaujour, bassist Dave Hill, and drummer Ray Kubian. Oh, and there’s a legendary “Dan Smith Will Teach You Guitar” flyer involved. If you know, you know.
The song itself grew out of a real moment of sadness. Gillard imagined two people talking through grief, finding their losses somehow reflected back at them through the night sky. It’s the kind of lyric that sneaks up on you — melancholy wrapped in a melody you can’t shake.
“Face Of Smiles” is the lead track from Parallel Stride, dropping April 24 on Dromedary Records. Parallel Stride was recorded around New York City with Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording and Travis Harrison at Serious Business Recording.
