Joyce Manor – “Well, Whatever It Was” [Video]

Joyce Manor Fire Back with “Well, Whatever It Was” — A Brit Bake-Off, SoCal Banger, and Punk Revival All Rolled Into One.

Joyce Manor are back and sounding bigger than ever with their new single “Well, Whatever It Was,” the first taste of their upcoming album I Used To Go To This Bar, out January 30th via Epitaph Records. The video, directed by the ever-brilliant Lance Bangs, spoofs The Great British Bake Off with a cast of comedians and musicians serving up pure chaos—and plenty of frosting.

Produced by SoCal punk legend Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion, Epitaph head honcho), I Used To Go To This Bar finds the Torrance trio—Barry Johnson, Chase Knobbe, and Matt Ebert—hitting that sweet spot between melodic punk punch and emotional pull. Johnson calls “Well, Whatever It Was” “one of the most Southern California songs ever recorded,” pointing out the blend of Jane’s Addiction swagger, Beach Boys shine, and RHCP groove that powers it. He’s not wrong—it’s breezy, brash, and tailor-made for blasting with the windows down.

Gurewitz’s production gives Joyce Manor a new layer of polish without dulling their bite. These are still the same heart-on-sleeve, melody-first punk lifers who made Never Hungover Again and 40 oz. to Fresno cult favorites, only now they sound ready to claim a bigger stage. Or as Gurewitz puts it, “If Barry was a novelist, he’d be Ernest Hemingway.” In other words, lean, loud, and full of life.
