The Twilight Singers
Powder Burns
One Little Indian Records [2006]

Time changes everything. In 2000, The Afghan Whigs were still active, The Twilight Singers were Greg Dulli’s side project, and Apple was just a computer company. Fast-forward a few years: The Whigs have become a memory, The Twilight Singers are a full-fledged band, and Apple dominates the music business. Powder Burns, the group’s fourth album, is also its strongest—a gritty, emotionally charged collection recorded in post-Katrina New Orleans.
Written during the aftermath and finished under curfew, Powder Burns pulses with urgency. These are songs of hope, despair, and resilience. The album features denser production than earlier efforts, with layered guitars, strings, and guest contributions from Joseph Arthur, Ani DiFranco, and former Whigs bassist John Curley. Dulli’s performance is deeply committed—this is the sound of an artist pouring everything into his work, down to the last beat. Powder Burns isn’t just a continuation of The Afghan Whigs legacy; it’s a bold evolution.
