The Black Angels: Passover [Album Review]

The Black Angels
Passover
Light In The Attic Records [2006]

The Black Angels hail from Austin, TX and took their name from The Velvet Underground & Nico, so what do you think they sound like? Country twang with lots of fuzzy guitars? You’d be half right. The band channels the Velvet Underground’s shadowy psychedelia and brings it into 2006. Fuzzed-out guitars, hypnotic drum patterns, and out-of-this-world groove vocals define Passover’s ten-track journey through droning rock and hallucinatory textures.

Alex Maas’ vocals guide you down winding corridors of sound, boxed in by towering walls of distortion and reverb. It’s a trip, and you’re never quite sure whether to turn back or push ahead. But trust me—keep going. Rockers like “Bloodhounds on My Trail” and the acid-drenched closer “Call to Arms” are among the record’s most gripping moments. Fans of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, or Pink Floyd will find themselves right at home. This isn’t retro—it’s resurrection through distortion.
