TFN video premiere today is from the Liverpool-based Novelty Island, which is the solo project of Tom McConnell, a multi-instrumentalist and clever songwriter that creates musically versatile indie-pop songs. The new single and video, “Bootlegs,” is from their latest release, Wallsend Weekend Television via 9×9 Records which is the follow up LP to their 2021 debut How Are You Coping With This Century?.
“Bootlegs” highlights McConnell’s knack for creating interesting song paces with its dreamy and atmospheric soundscapes. The standout track will immediately catch you ear with its groovy bassline and infectious jangle. The track draws from various influences, including indie pop, rock, and electronic music while McConnell’s use of different instruments and production techniques creates a cohesive sound that is both familiar and fresh.
Tom McConnell had this to say about the track:
“Everyone was watching ITV2 at Frankie’s while I wrote “Bootlegs” with the headphones on and then I dropped a pot noodle everywhere. I wanted to weave the loops in and out of each other and I made a drum machine out of my own mouth noises at Abbey Road Institute to lay somewhere in the drum mix. Lyrically inspired by downloading many many bootlegs as a teenager and how exciting yet solitary it all was…”
