J.R. Wicker has a story to tell and like all great singer/songwriters, his narrative come together best in song. Wicker is from Memphis and has had plenty of hardships that would take anyone mentally to a different place. From being held up at gunpoint by a child to getting robbed of everything he owned, Wicker has had challenges. Even his profession of an ICU nurse was not much of an outlet as the pandemic proved to be incredibly testing to everyone in the health care field.
All of these events helped drive the song “Darkness” you hear today. Wicker has a very indie sounding style to his voice on “Darkness,” which I think has a similarity to Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits), especially as it builds into a climax with the harmonized lines “You know they stole the night.” This “guy next door” sound makes “Darkness” and easy track to stay in your head and most likely will tap your own experiences that you have overcome.
Check out the track today and you can find “Darkness” this Friday, July 8th, at all your favorite digital outlets!
