They Are Gutting a Body of Water are back with a head-spinning new single, “rl stine,” from their upcoming album LOTTO, dropping October 17 via Julia’s War, Smoking Room, and ATO Records. It’s a swirl of melody and noise that moves like a slow-motion car crash—beautiful, chaotic, and impossible to look away.
Doug Dulgarian explains the track’s uneasy heart: he buys a daily pack of Newport hundreds for a neighbor, knowing it’ll be traded for crack. “I wonder if it’s the addict in me, enabling the addict in him, or if I just understand his struggle,” he says. “Perhaps we’re the same after all.” That tension between empathy and complicity gives “rl stine” its quiet sting.
LOTTO finds TAGABOW leaning hard into their human side. The band ditched the digital polish, capturing the sound of four people making noise in a room—mistakes, sweat, and all. It’s the latest move from a crew that’s made a career of bending shoegaze into something stranger and louder, from floor-level shows with N64-style EDM breaks to pedalboard worship that fuels their cult following.
To sweeten the deal, they’re re-pressing three early cult favorites—gestures been (2018), Destiny XL (2019), and Lucky (2022)—so newer fans can grab the classics on wax while waiting for LOTTO.
