The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are back with a fresh video for their classic single “Kurt Cobain’s Cardigan,” taken from Perfect Right Now: A Slumberland Collection 2008–2010. The video mixes grainy Super 8 footage by Shannon McMahon (My Little Underground zine, WNYU DJ) with live shots from a 2008 Nottingham show — the kind of hazy, heart-on-sleeve energy that made the band’s early days feel like a secret worth sharing. Directed by longtime collaborator Art Boonparn, it’s a sweet rewind to when indiepop felt unstoppable.
Frontman Kip Berman recalls how the song’s title became a kind of rallying cry for the band: “Even before we wrote it, that phrase was a mantra. We probably wouldn’t have discovered the bands we love if Kurt hadn’t told his fans to check out The Vaselines, Beat Happening, and Teenage Fanclub.”
With Perfect Right Now rounding up those long-lost B-sides and deep cuts from their Higher Than the Stars era — including “Say No to Love” and “The Pains of Being Pure at Heart” — this release reminds us just how good they were at making pop that shimmered, fuzzed, and hit straight to the heart.
The band also announced new tour dates across the UK and US, with support from The Cords, Fear of Men, Cassie Ramone, and Living Hour. Full list below — and yes, some shows are already sold out.
