Searows Unleashes “Dearly Missed” Ahead of Death in the Business of Whaling

Searows is back with something massive. Alec Duckart, the Pacific Northwest songwriter behind the project, just dropped the video for “Dearly Missed,” a six-minute stormer that pushes far beyond the hushed bedroom recordings of Guard Dog. Instead, it crackles with heavy guitars, thunderous drums, and a raw urgency that feels like he’s ripping open the floorboards of his folk-leaning past.

Duckart calls “Dearly Missed” his nod to the “good for her” horror genre—music as retribution. It’s visceral, cathartic, and unflinching, channeling both his love of horror films and the brutal realities marginalized people face every day. You can hear it in every growl of guitar and every shouted line: this is Searows at his fiercest.

The track sets the tone for Death in the Business of Whaling, out January 23 via Last Recordings On Earth. Unlike his intimate debut Guard Dog, which was crafted alone in his Portland bedroom, this new record came alive in a converted horse barn near Seattle. Teaming with producer Trevor Spencer (Father John Misty, Beach House, Mary Lattimore), Duckart chased a bigger, more expansive sound—folklore-driven, symbol-heavy songs that feel like they’ve been carved from the collective subconscious.

“The songs are still personal,” Duckart explains, “but this time they’re coded, more symbolic. It’s less about baring my diary and more about digging into the shadows we all carry—our spirit, trauma, love, and fate.”

Fresh off tours with Gracie Abrams and Ethel Cain, Searows will bring these new songs across the UK and EU this fall, with a mix of headline shows, intimate listening parties, and big stages alongside Tamino.
