Rhett Miller Unveils A Lifetime of Riding by Night + New Single “Come As You Are”
Rhett Miller’s back with a new solo album, A Lifetime of Riding by Night, dropping on October 10 via ATO Records. It’s his tenth solo effort, and it’s packed with raw honesty and a sense of reflection. Produced by his Old 97’s bandmate Murry Hammond, the album explores themes of love, mortality, and Miller’s own personal struggles, including the physical toll he faced just before undergoing high-risk vocal surgery. The 13-track collection features collaborations with Evan Felker of Turnpike Troubadours, Caitlin Rose, Nicole Atkins, and Jesse Valenzuela of Gin Blossoms.
First single “Come As You Are” is out now, and it features Felker on background vocals. A heartfelt tune that touches on the bittersweetness of life on the road and the struggle of leaving loved ones behind. Miller reflects, “It’s a sweet song, but there’s a sadness to it—it’s a reflection of the human condition.” Felker, who co-wrote the song, added, “Rhett’s been an inspiration to me, both in my career and life. He’s someone you should definitely meet.”
Recorded in Los Angeles, A Lifetime of Riding by Night sees Miller embracing vulnerability and stripped-back, intimate folk/indie rock. Despite grappling with pain from his surgery during the recording process, Miller opted to keep the rawness in the final version of the album, feeling that those imperfections made the songs even more human.
The album also marks Miller’s reunion with Hammond, who produced his debut album back when Miller was just 17. “I trusted Murry completely,” Miller says. “I let him pick the tracks and shape the sound. It was a great experience.”
The album is now available for pre-order, including a limited edition vinyl run of 300 copies pressed on frosted Coke bottle, available only via Rhett Miller’s and ATO’s web store.
