Punk Hearts, Charro Suits, Big Feelings — Mariachi El Bronx Are Back
Los Angeles genre busters Mariachi El Bronx have returned with the video for “Forgive or Forget,” the first look at their upcoming album Mariachi El Bronx IV, out February 13 on ATO. It has been twelve years since their last record, but the band’s spark has not faded. If anything, this new chapter feels sharper, brighter, and packed with emotion.
“Forgive or Forget” features violinist Ray Suen from Childish Gambino and Lorde, giving the track an extra burst of movement and lift. The new video, directed by Blaze Gonzalez and edited by Dean Williams, leans into the song’s theme of romanticizing your lowest moments and somehow finding your way through them with a smile.
The album feels like a reset without losing the storytelling charm that has always defined the band. After a long break, Mariachi El Bronx IV channels the pull between heartbreak and hope. Frontman Matt Caughthran wrote much of it while navigating personal loss, marriage, and the heaviness of the world around him, all while recording in East LA as the Eaton Canyon fires lit up the hills. The result is their most heartfelt and vivid record yet.
And while it is easy to think of Mariachi El Bronx as punk musicians in charro suits, that description barely captures what they do. They approach mariachi with deep respect, strengthened by years of learning from the masters at Casa del Mariachi in Boyle Heights, where Mr. George has crafted suits for more than fifty years. That reverence blends naturally with their working class punk roots, placing the band right where they have always belonged: somewhere between tradition, rebellion, and pure joy.
If you have seen them live, you know what they deliver. The eight piece lineup — Caughthran, Joby J. Ford, Jared Shavelson, Keith Douglas, Ray Suen, Brad Magers, Ken Horne, and Vincent Hidalgo — turns every show into a celebration. Their run of upcoming four dollar shows presented by Liquid Death is nearly sold out, including a Valentine’s Day release party in Tijuana.
