Jay Som & Hayley Williams Reconnect Through “Past Lives” — A Spin Through Memory & Motion
Jay Som is back — and she didn’t come alone. Melina Duterte’s long-awaited return arrived several weeks ago in full technicolor with Belong, her first album in six years and easily her most ambitious yet. The record marks a bold new chapter for the Los Angeles-based producer and songwriter, and today she’s shared a new video for “Past Lives,” her collaboration with Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The animated clip, directed by Studio Sparks, transforms the song’s introspective lyrics into a dreamlike journey through frozen landscapes and flickering memories. A tiny figure tumbles through melting cliffs, falling stars, and reflections of her former self — a visual metaphor for rediscovery and transformation that perfectly matches Duterte’s shimmering production and Williams’ emotional lift.
After years spent producing heavyweights like boygenius (the record) and Lucy Dacus (Forever Is A Feeling), Duterte reclaims her own voice with Belong — a vibrant, layered set that bends power-pop, electronic textures, and glowing ballads into something totally her own.
Jay Som’s first North American tour in over five years kicks off this winter, but first she’s heading overseas.
