Jay Som – Float [Video]

| |

JAY SOM IS BACK.

After six long years, Melina Duterte returns with Belong — a bold, wide-ranging new record dropping October 10 via Polyvinyl. It’s still the solo bedroom-pop magic we love, but this time she opens the door to some seriously cool collaborators: Hayley Williams (Paramore), Jim Adkins (Jimmy Eat World), and Lexi Vega (Mini Trees) all show up, marking the first time Jay Som has ever featured guest vocalists on a record.

Belong isn’t just a comeback — it’s a reinvention. These 11 tracks bounce between dreamy slow burns and fuzzed-out anthems, folding in glossy electronics, early-2000s emo nostalgia, and punchy power-pop riffs. Think heartbreak meets heartland, through the lens of someone who’s been deep in the indie production trenches (boygenius, Lucy Dacus, etc.) and is now stepping back into the spotlight on her own terms.

First taste? Check out the hooky, emotional “Float” featuring Jim Adkins — a track that blends West Coast emo shimmer with Jay Som’s signature melodic layering. There’s also the moody, synth-soaked “A Million Reasons Why,” which lands somewhere between a breakup text and a slow dance in your bedroom. Oh, and the video for “Float” cheekily nods to “The Middle” in a way that’s too good to be coincidence.

Jay Som also just announced her first North American tour in over five years. She’ll be hitting the road with Lucy Dacus this summer before launching a headlining run this fall. Full dates below — get your tickets Friday, July 11 at 10am local.
