Golden Apples Return With Shimmering New Single “Noonday Demon” + Album Shooting Star Drops Sept. 19 via Lame-O

Golden Apples are back, beaming in from Philadelphia with “Noonday Demon,” a glimmering and tightly wound cut from their upcoming LP Shooting Star, out September 19th on Lame-O Records. The track’s jangly haze and layered vocals hit like a brain zap—equal parts sunshine and static. It’s the kind of song that swirls around your head long after it ends.

Led by songwriter Russell Edling, Golden Apples dial up both charm and existential dread here, naming the single after the hefty depression tome that’s apparently been living on Edling’s nightstand. “Noonday Demon” picks apart the paranoia that sneaks in when you’re mid-spiral, blurring your sense of self and leaving you wondering how you got so far off track. The video—directed by Andrew Shearer—matches the song’s dazed, slightly unhinged energy with just the right amount of weird.

Shooting Star is Golden Apples’ fourth album and easily their most expansive. It’s a weird, warm patchwork built across different recording spaces and stitched together by mix engineer Matthew Schimelfenig. Rather than lock himself away, Edling opened the process to collaboration, letting the songs unfold in unexpected directions. The result is a record that feels lived-in but never sleepy—scruffy guitars one minute, ghostly mellotron the next.

You’ll hear echoes of Michael Hurley, Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, and even a touch of Karen Dalton in there, but Golden Apples keep it grounded in something raw and totally their own. Whether it’s Edling pondering the nature of creativity or slipping in heartfelt notes to his partner and bandmate Mimi Gallagher, the album’s full of sweet surprises and sideways turns. These are songs that know the world’s falling apart but still want to fall in love, write music, and show up for the good stuff.

Golden Apples are on the road now, playing a couple shows with Joyce Manor before hitting NYC, Philly, and Philly again for the fall fest crowd.
