Charlotte Cornfield – “Hurts Like Hell” [Video]

| |

A Soft Heart With a Steady Pulse

Charlotte Cornfield has shared the video for “Hurts Like Hell,” the title track from her upcoming album Hurts Like Hell, out March 27 via Merge Records. It’s her sixth full-length and first for the label, and it finds Cornfield sounding more open, grounded, and quietly confident than ever.

Written in the wake of becoming a parent in 2023, Hurts Like Hell reflects a shift in perspective. These songs lean into vulnerability, growth, and the uneasy courage it takes to keep showing up. Cornfield steps beyond her own voice here, writing through characters and shared experiences without losing the intimacy that makes her songwriting hit home.

The title track moves gently but with purpose. Pedal steel, soft harmonies, and a relaxed band feel wrap around Cornfield’s calm delivery, with Buck Meek’s backing vocals adding warmth and lift. It’s a shy love song that takes its time, letting small emotional turns do the heavy lifting.

The video, directed by Scott Jacobson, adds a playful touch. Cornfield and James Urbaniak star as feuding neighbors who settle their differences through dance, turning tension into something loose, funny, and human.

Recorded live with a full band at Philip Weinrobe’s Sugar Mountain studio, Hurts Like Hell is Cornfield’s most collaborative album to date. The result feels communal, unforced, and full of trust. It’s a record about opening doors, letting people in, and seeing what happens next.
