Fairy Rust is the new album from Louisville Kentucky based trio, Wombo. The arty post punk from the band is quick at times but overall styled with letting songs develop at a slower pace. The band excels at not taking any music to an extreme distorted level but let’s each angular guitar twist, swirling bass strum and snappy drumbeat encircle the trance inducing vocals of Sydney Chadwick.

Chadwick’s tone is so smooth as her vocals remind me of artists like PJ Harvey, Lena Karlsson from 90’s Sweedish band Komeda or even Mitski. The music follows her lead supplying some classic undertone post-punk grooves in the background while also injecting avant-garde jazz pieces that give Fairy Rust’s songs looser borders. This delivery injects the album with diverse rhythms as songs like “Snakey,” “Backflip” and “Regular Demon” will keep your foot tapping while a moodier atmosphere is set on “RVW” and closer “Seven Of Cups.” Wombo sounds like a band that has only just discovered their capabilities as Fairy Rust is a highlighted defining moment!
