I believe that when Pennywise lead vocalist and songwriter Jim Lindberg stepped down last year, not many people would have predicted he would already have formed a new band, let alone released a brand-new album. Well—surprise! The Black Pacific‘s debut drops next week, and it is easily the best thing Lindberg has released in 15 years. The album sticks to his strengths: it’s a punk rock record at its core, but the style is what makes it so rich. The Black Pacific strikes a perfect balance between creating an in-your-face punk record with biting guitars, strong pulsating riffs, and pounding drums, while also offering melodic, catchy, and memorable tunes.

Right from the opening track, “The System,” the record takes off into an energetic frenzy that will feel familiar. The record transitions into one of its hardest-hitting tracks, “When It’s Over,” which will win you over quickly. The fresh band vibe has totally re-energized Lindberg and removed any pressure to release something substantial. He completely succeeds here, making a strong statement about why Pennywise was so successful. Even on the mid-tempo track “Kill Your Idols,” there’s a grinding undertone that bursts from the song’s structure, grabbing your attention. The Black Pacific delivers aggressive anthems, heavy punk chords, and dynamic range, all with a fresh edge, making this debut easily one of the best punk records of the year!
