Magneta Lane: Dancing With Daggers [Album Review]

Magneta Lane
Dancing With Daggers
Paper Bag Records [2006]

Ever wonder what The Strokes might sound like with female vocals? Give Magneta Lane’s debut full-length Dancing With Daggers a spin. The Toronto-based trio has refined that “New York sound” with their own darker, swagger-filled twist. Every track feels confident and focused, making the band seem more like seasoned veterans than newcomers.

Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, the album is sharper and moodier than their 2004 EP The Constant Lover. Credit is due to producer Jesse Keeler (of Death From Above 1979), who keeps the energy tight and the sound polished without losing its edge. Dancing With Daggers is the kind of record that builds momentum in college circles and hints at even bigger things for Magneta Lane’s future.
