Kings of Leon
WALLS
RCA Records [2016]
Who: Three Tennessee brothers and their cousin. Grizzled veterans of rock.
Sound: Southern arena rock.
TFN Final Take: Kings of Leon were so close last time! Perceived band discord led to an album, Mechanical Bull, that felt fresh after a few albums of retreads. WALLS sees Kings of Leon revert back to that safe form; it’s not that the songs are bad. They’re more unimaginative than anything – each one has a solid riff or hook but fails to build on that foundation. It becomes more repetitive and redundant than anything. In summary, this is an album for fans but doesn’t bring much new to the table. It’s a bit of a letdown after the fun and boldness of Mechanical Bull.
