Irving
Death In The Garden, Blood On The Flowers
Eenie Meenie Records [2006]

Death In The Garden, Blood On The Flowers finds Irving stepping confidently into their second full-length with a sharper edge and a knack for tightly wound indie pop. With an MTV2-featured video for “Situation” (okay, maybe 3 a.m., but still!), the band capitalizes on their growing buzz to deliver an album full of memorable melodies, jittery energy, and clever arrangements. The title may sound ominous, but the music is all vibrant charm and catchy quirk.
What separates Irving from many of their new wave-inspired peers is their playful songwriting. Tracks can pivot on a dime, like the kazoo-laced title track or the shifting structure of “She’s Not Shy,” but the hooks are always close by. The balance between experimental flair and melodic discipline makes this one of those records that grows stronger with every listen. If you’re looking for something off-kilter but infectiously catchy, Irving’s got your back.
