Buffalo Killers
3
Alive Natural Sound Records [2011]

If you’re craving early ’70s groove rock, Cincinnati’s Buffalo Killers’ third LP, 3, is a must-listen. The trio pulls off a time travel right from the opening track, “Huma Bird.” The soaring vocals from brothers Andy and Zach Gabbard immediately grab your attention, while drummer Joey Sebaali’s steady beat will have you tapping your foot along. The song sets the stage for 3, with most of the tracks following a similar structure and mid-tempo pace. This consistent approach creates a straightforward listening experience that showcases the band’s competence and confidence. It’s an album that will either win you over instantly or simply may not be your thing.

The Buffalo Killers do surprise with a few moments on 3 that take the album to another level. One standout is the slow-burning “All Turn To Cloud,” which features banjo and lap steel, adding a fresh Americana flavor that perfectly complements the band’s style. The album also benefits from some great guest contributions, including Brian Olive’s saxophone and Kelley Deal’s backup vocals on the closing slow jam, “Could Never Be.” This track reunites the pair, who previously collaborated on a Guided By Voices tribute earlier that year.

On 3, the Buffalo Killers successfully bridge rock eras and put a modern indie spin on a genre with a long history. The album gets better with each listen and is perfect for relaxing as the band builds a musical landscape with all its rock grandeur.
