Barrence Whitfield & The Savages
Under The Savage Sky
Bloodshot Records [2015]
Fire Drill Album Review: Many of us were not around for the early Barrence Whitfield era back in the 80’s but all you really need to know is that his punk rock soul is pure. On his sophomore release for Bloodshot, Under The Savage Sky, Whitfield brings back his Savages and delivers another cool blues rocking album that gives you raw vocals, driving guitar, a killer rhythm section and plenty of attitude. From the horn heavy stroller, “The Wolf Pack,” to the fiery just over two minute “The Claw,” Whitfield never lets up off the pedal. Fans that like both classic garage artists such as The Sonics and current trend setters like POW! and Wild Raccoon should easily be able to settle down with Under The Savage Sky. Whitfield stays the path for all 36 minutes here, which is just the right amount of time and trust me when I say – this dude can blow!
