Fire Track: Superchunk – “No Hope”

Superchunk Shout Through the Static with “No Hope” from Songs in the Key of Yikes

Superchunk are back with another shot of melodic mayhem—“No Hope” is the latest cut from their upcoming record Songs in the Key of Yikes, out August 22 on Merge. It’s a gut-punch and a pep talk all at once, with Mac McCaughan turning dread into defiance as he sings the title like a mantra… until he breaks it with a twist: “and here we are singing.” That single line hits like a lifeline—worn-out but still wired, still trying.

The band announced Songs in the Key of Yikes last month with “Is It Making You Feel Something,” which earned shoutouts from many, and basically everyone who’s ever wanted to yell in tune. And yeah—they still sound like the most fired-up band on your record shelf.

The album taps into that classic Superchunk energy—tight, loud, and emotionally raw—but it’s also wired for now. There’s anxiety, resilience, even joy in the rubble. It’s Majesty Shredding if someone spilled coffee and dread all over it.

Produced by Paul Voran and Eli Webb, and mixed by Mike Montgomery (The Breeders, Protomartyr), the record features new full-time drummer Laura King and guests like Rosali Middleman, members of Quivers, and touring bassist Betsy Wright.

Listen to the new single “No Hope” now and start screaming sweetly into the void.
