Fire Track: Sharp Pins – “(I Wanna) Be Your Girl”

Sharp Pins Light the Fuse with “(I Want to) Be Your Girl”

Sharp Pins are back with a new single, “(I Wanna) Be Your Girl,” the first taste of Balloon Balloon Balloon (out November 21 via K/Perennial). Following hot on the heels of the reissue of Radio DDR—a record that snagged critical attention including landing on our Top 50 Albums of 2024 —Kai Slater is once again showing he’s got a gift for turning left-field pop into something instantly unforgettable.

This track is a slice of pure, jangly sunshine: 12-string sparkle, ear-hook choruses, and just the right amount of lo-fi grit. Slater’s songwriting nods toward cult heroes like Curt Boettcher, Emitt Rhodes, and Alex Chilton, but he delivers it with the raw immediacy of someone obsessed with the perfect pop song. The result? Tunes that feel both timeless and alive right now.

With Balloon Balloon Balloon, Sharp Pins aren’t just riding the current wave of jangly guitar bands (think Good Flying Birds, Soup Activists, Famous Mammals)—they’re leading it. These are songs made for that late-night buzz after a gig, when you’re hanging with friends and dreaming about starting your own band. Sharp Pins supply the soundtrack to that spark.

“(I Wanna) Be Your Girl” makes it pretty clear: Kai Slater isn’t just playing at being part of the great guitar-pop tradition—he’s already staked his spot in it.
