Fire Track: Pierpont & Helgeson – “Zaragoza”

| |

“Southwest Shadows. Twin Cities Heat.”

The third track from Pierpont & Helgeson’s upcoming album Of Time is “Zaragoza” and it hits like a sun-bleached postcard from a place you’ve never been but swear you remember. The groove snaps into motion with tumbling Latin percussion, thick baritone guitar lines, and drums that stomp ahead with purpose. Above it all, the horns and strings float around like heat waves bending the horizon. The song moves in unexpected shapes with quick turns, sly builds, little rhythmic tricks, but it always circles back with a sense of direction. It feels like a road trip through strange scenery where every mile has its own story.

The St. Paul duo of Cy Pierpont (aka Eric Foss) and Riley Helgeson have been orbiting each other for nearly ten years, first crossing paths in Sonny Knight & The Lakers. After the band ended in 2017, Pierpont paused the label grind and disappeared into a garage studio he built during 2020. Those loose sessions with Helgeson originally sparked The Hi-Bridge Band, but one tune, “Billy the Kid” shifted everything. Suddenly their sound leaned into dusty soundtracks, bold grooves, and widescreen moods. And just like that, Pierpont & Helgeson became its own universe.

Their debut LP Of Time arrives December 5 on Secret Stash Records (distributed by Light In The Attic), complete with a limited, hand-numbered white-vinyl edition featuring an exclusive 12-page booklet of film-style artwork and story-driven notes for every track. It’s only available through the label, and the preorder is live now.
