The Afghan Whigs formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1986, with Greg Dulli, guitarist Rick McCollum, bassist John Curley, and drummer Steve Earle establishing the band’s original lineup. Their early records leaned heavily into garage rock and punk before Congregation revealed a deeper fascination with soul, R&B, and darker storytelling. That combination became the foundation for their breakthrough. The band’s move from Sub Pop to Elektra brought 1993’s Gentlemen, an uncompromising examination of damaged relationships that remains one of the defining alternative rock albums of its era. Black Love followed with a more cinematic approach, while 1965 embraced the sensuality and groove that had always been simmering beneath their guitars.

After splitting in 2001, Dulli continued exploring similar territory with The Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins, his collaboration with Mark Lanegan. The Afghan Whigs eventually reunited, returning with Do to the Beast in 2014. Alongside longtime bassist John Curley and a changing cast of musicians, Dulli continued expanding the band’s sound through In Spades, How Do You Burn?, and Soft Control.
