Sleater-Kinney formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994 around Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein, both already active in the riot grrrl and Pacific Northwest punk communities. Named after Sleater Kinney Road in nearby Lacey, the band quickly developed a distinctive approach built around Tucker’s enormous voice, Brownstein’s angular playing, and the friction created by two guitars operating without a traditional bassist. Janet Weiss joined for 1997’s Dig Me Out, completing the lineup that would produce the band’s defining run.
Across records like The Hot Rock, One Beat, and The Woods, Sleater-Kinney expanded far beyond its punk beginnings without sacrificing intensity. The trio disbanded in 2006, reunited nearly a decade later, and eventually continued as a Tucker and Brownstein partnership following Weiss’s 2019 departure. Through every incarnation, Sleater-Kinney has remained driven by confrontation, curiosity, and an instinct to keep pushing forward.
