The Lemon Twigs Dreamed Up “2 or 3” in Buenos Aires and It Shows
The Lemon Twigs have always had a gift for the kind of pop song that sounds effortless and probably wasn’t. “2 or 3” is a perfect example — a bouncy, bright-eyed thing that Brian D’Addario literally dreamed into existence the morning after the band’s first-ever Buenos Aires show. He woke up with the chorus already in his head, words and all, which by his own admission almost never happens. The song that came from it is about a guy who isn’t quite worldly enough for his girlfriend and has to fake his way through fine art and history. It is extremely catchy.
The track is the latest preview of Look For Your Mind!, the Twigs’ sixth album and follow-up to the beloved A Dream Is All We Know, due May 8 on Captured Tracks. Underneath all the pop polish runs an undercurrent of paranoia that Brian describes bluntly: “I do think that now is a time of insanity. You really have to hold onto your own mind if you don’t wanna lose it.” The album is smarter than it first lets on, which is exactly how the best pop records work.
New to the studio mix this time are live members Reza Matin on drums, Danny Ayala on bass, and Eva Chambers of Tchotchke — a looser, more collaborative setup than the brothers-do-everything approach of earlier records. The result sounds like a band hitting their stride at exactly the right moment. They head out on tour this month across North America before swinging through the UK and Ireland. Dates below.
