When we last saw the moniker Mild High Club it was paired with none other than King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. There was once a time, way back in 2017, where Gizzard released 5 albums in one year. One of those was their collaboration Sketches of New Brunswick East. Reflecting back on that review it’s funny to see that I said, “The album showcases a touch of muzak and Vince Guaraldi trio.” With the new effort, Going Going Gone that continues to ring true.

Going Going Gone Isn’t all elevators and jazz, this album does incorporate a lot. “Kluges I” glides the album in as a hazy sun sets to make way for the twinkle in the night sky. Second single, “Dionysian State” is a beautiful jam that carries a swoon worthy sax solo. “Taste Tomorrow” is a druggy dirge that’s fallen straight out of Hotline Miami. “A New High” starts to go in a Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots approach which is quickly ended by French, Brazilian Bossa-nova. “It’s Over Again” goes woozy with brass, hip-hop, and messy grooves.

Going Going Gone is an album that shows growth. Not only from 2016’s Skiptracing but from Sketches as well. “Waving” goes big into R&B with a page taken from the Stevie Wonder playbook. “Me Myself and Dollar Hell” delivers a smooth Knopfler-esque solo. It’s these little surprises that make that album interesting. Just like St. Vincent’s latest, Daddy’s Home, the album has warmth as well as bombast. Upon first listen the Going Going Gone comes across as a hazy, semi-obscure, mess. But, if you take your time and continue with multiple listens you get rewarded with an interesting 30 minutes of album that never overstays its’ welcome.
