Fire Drill Album Review: Big Ups 2nd LP, Before a Million Universes, is a post-hardcore juggernaut. No sophomore slump here for the Brooklyn-based quartet. It sounds like Big Ups have been listening to 90’s indie post-rock legends Slint and Rodan. Their first LP had moments where you could hear those influences, but Universes really embraces them. Taut bursts of loud quiet loud howling vocals contrast with spoken word restraint. Deep bass contrasts with jagged and skeletal guitar work suggest that Big Ups has a lot more to offer their genre than just getting you to jump into a mosh pit. One of the best albums I have heard this year. I will say this two more times in this article…
