If you are counting (and I know you are), “Islands (She Talks In Rainbows)” is the second single from Guided By Voices forthcoming full length English Little League which is due out on April 30th. This 7-inch immediately will stand out as it puts Tobin Sprout in the spotlight.
If you have been keeping up with the GBV full length releases last year I think you might agree that the Sprout tracks just keep getting stronger. Well that trend continues here as the just over two minute A-side “Islands (She Talks In Rainbows)” is one of the catchiest tracks Tobin has penned in years! From the very start it quietly builds up its first 17 seconds until it explodes with Sprout’s confident soft lead vocals. The chorus is immediately ingrained in your head and the track only gets better as you crank up the volume. Easily Sprout’s best track so far from the four recent records.
The first B-side is the pleasant and likable “She Wore Blue And Green” (which you can hear exclusively above) that is just a nice acoustic strummer. It features a soaring Sprout vocal that is clean and out front. The second B-side here, “Full Framed Luberon”, brings back frontman Pollard doing his thing on this lo-fi noisy Circus Devil like track.
Like Flunky Minnows the jacket on this 7-inch has the soft paper feel of yesteryear. The wax is standard black, the label is the standard GBV Inc. imprint, the single includes a free digital download and the pressing is limited to 1000 copies worldwide. Unfortunately Rockathon is sold out of these so I would encourage you to scour your local indie record store or the Internet if you would like a copy.
