Fire Drill Album Review: I will stand by Telekinesis’ debut album (Telekinesis!) as one of the best power pop collections in the past ten years. Sadly, Michael Lerner (the artist behind the Telekinesis moniker) continues to drift away from the sound that worked so well then. His latest album, Ad Infinitum, ditches the electric guitar for a synthesizer and the results are mostly mild and forgettable. Lerner’s songwriting and ability to craft a melody still stand out – he can write a bridge and chorus with the best of them. However, the excitement and energy are missing that were so prevalent on his previous work. “Courtesy Phone” is my favorite song on the album and it’s no coincidence that it would fit right in on Telekinesis! You can’t fault Lerner for trying something different but it just doesn’t work as well.
